What does the duplex structure add over an austenitic steel?
Roughly twice the yield strength of a 1.4404 and markedly better resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. In return the upper service limit is around 250 °C – above that comes 475 °C embrittlement.
What is 1.4462 used for?
Above all where standard stainless steels reach their limits with chlorides/seawater: offshore, desalination, aggressive chemicals.
