1.4828 (X15CrNiSi20-12) is a heat-resisting austenitic steel to EN 10095. Around 20 % chromium together with the raised silicon content forms a tightly adhering oxide layer – in air the material is therefore scaling-resistant to about 1000 °C.

1.4828 is a silicon-alloyed austenitic steel for the hot gas path – scaling-resistant to about 1000 °C, but not designed for pressure-bearing components in the creep range.

Heat-resisting is not the same as creep-resistant: EN 10095 describes resistance to scaling in hot gas, not creep rupture strength under pressure. For pressure-bearing components in the creep range, choose a creep-resistant grade with design values to AD 2000 or EN 13445. Prolonged service between roughly 600 and 850 °C can cause sigma-phase embrittlement, and sulphur-bearing atmospheres can cause sulphidation – we are happy to clarify both with you beforehand.

Up to what temperature can 1.4828 be used?
1.4828 is scaling-resistant in air to about 1000 °C. That is a statement about oxidation resistance, not strength – for pressure-bearing components in the creep range a creep-resistant grade must be chosen.
What is the difference between heat-resisting and creep-resistant?
Heat-resisting steels to EN 10095 withstand scaling in hot gas. Creep-resistant steels such as 16Mo3 or 10CrMo9-10 are designed for creep rupture strength under pressure. 1.4828 belongs to the first group.
